We’re in Love is the tenth song on the record, debut album by indie supergroup boygenius. During a fan Q&A at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, Lucy Dacus revealed that this song is written to and with her bandmates (Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers) about the importance of their friendship. "I wrote a song, We’re In Love, for them, but there are like one-word changes that Phoebe made that opened up the whole meaning of the song. Like the color of a flower. There’s a carnation line, and it was white, which I just picked, and then she was like, 'Make it pink,' because it’s a reference." Dacus continued: "Elliott Smith tried to wear a pink carnation with his white suit at the Oscars. And the Oscars were like, 'It looks corny.'" An excerpt from NPR provides further insight into the song’s meaning and intimate nature: "Baker initially rejected the song, arguing to keep it off the record — later, after coming around to it, she admitted that the song is a reminder that 'it’s still a learning process' for her 'to know the difference between being scrutinized and being seen.' In light of Baker’s admission, the song sounds like the acknowledgement of a simple truth: that our friends might truly know us — our flaws and our mistakes included — and keep choosing to love us anyway."
